Why Routine Eye Tests are Vital to Catching Reversible Eye Problems

Last updated 2 days 16 hours ago

Regular eye exams are an essential part of maintaining your overall health and wellness. Experts recommend that eye checkups should begin as early as three years of age and be completed every one to two years up to age 70—after which time annual visits are recommended.

In addition to evaluating your eyes for prescription eye glasses and contacts lenses, your eye doctor will perform an eye test to check for signs of certain eye conditions, including:

    • Amblyopia: This occurs when the eyes are turned or when one eye has a much different prescription. This forces your brain to shut off the image from the turned or blurry eye. When left untreated, this condition can stung your visual development and result in permanent visual impairment.
    • Strabismus: Characterized by crossed or turned eyes that lead to problems with depth perception, strabismus may also increase the risk of amblyopia.
    • Eye-Teaming Problems: When your eyes do not work together, it affects reading and near-vision tasks, and causes eye strain and headaches.
    • Focusing Problems: These may include incompletely developed focusing skills or presbyopia.
    • Eye Diseases: Other eye diseases include cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

Routine eye exams can also allow your eye doctor to detect early signs of other health conditions and diseases. By analyzing the blood vessels and retinas of both eyes, your doctor may be able to determine if you are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and liver disease. The sooner these eye conditions are detected, the better your chances of successful treatment. While glaucoma cannot be reversed the debilitating effects may be lessened or postponed with early treatment.

Make sure your eyes are as healthy as they can be by setting up an eye exam with your laser vision correction clinic. Give our eye doctors with the Goldberg Centre For Vision Correction a call at (866) 948-3921 or visit our website to get started.

    The Himalayan Cataract Project

    Last updated 6 days ago

In Nepal, it is customary for an aging mother to live with one of her sons. Unfortunately for one elderly woman with cataracts, her three sons have moved to a foreign country leaving, her and her daughter to fend for themselves.

This documentary takes a closer look at the effect cataracts have on aging individuals. Nepalese residents often live in joint families—which can create an extreme burden when one of the family members is blind or extremely visually impaired. Luckily, the Himalayan Cataract Project has brought eye care and cataract surgery to Nepal. Check out this full video for more information on one woman’s journey to restore her sight.

What Facial Skin Issues Can Be Treated with Laser Skin Resurfacing?

    Last updated 11 days ago

While plastic surgery procedures can help reduce or eliminate the signs of aging, most of us would prefer a less invasive approach to skin rejuvenation. Fortunately, medical spas offer laser skin resurfacing treatments to help provide you with a more youthful glow.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments are performed on an outpatient basis and may include the use of local anesthetic or topical anesthetic. During the procedure, your skin care specialist will use the laser to gently vaporize the outer layer of skin, exfoliating dead skin cells and revealing a new layer of skin. Unlike other treatment methods, laser skin resurfacing stimulates your body’s natural collagen growth to improve elasticity as well as the tone and texture of your skin.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments can be performed to reduce or eliminate fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone or pigmentation, and even improve the look of recessed acne scars. Laser treatments may also be utilized to remove pre-cancerous growths and lesions.

Immediately following the procedure, your face will be dressed with bandages. It is normal for the outer layer of your skin to peel and scab before fresh skin appears. Most patients find that laser skin rejuvenation procedures can make them look 10 to 20 years younger with the results lasting approximately 10 years.  However, it is important to avoid the sun and protect your face from wind and other environmental factors as they may damage your new skin.

The best way to determine if you’re a candidate for laser skin rejuvenation is to consult with your local medical spa or skin care clinic. Learn more about your skin care options by contacting Goldberg Centre Medical Spa and Cosmetic Surgery at (866) 948-3921. We also offer injectables and acne scar removal treatments.
